A portrait must be as natural as possible. A portrait should reflect the personality of the person. Hmmm and what if the portrait should show what the photographer had seen in that moment ? Not his emotion but what he thought his model was feeling. Reflecting that assumed emotional layer ? Too complicated ? Oh no. Its a thing of feeling. As i said in older threads, a picture with the “Boom Boom” effect has something to do with emotions, emotional layers established between photographer and subject. And has a lot of living emotions itself based on posing, scenes or other attributes. Depends as well on the distance you had to your subject, whether you were far away out of the scene or just within or close up. When going into a subjects surrounding, into his nearest distance, you hear breath, may taste hair, smell the subject. No question if you like it or not. You are in the scene, you are part of it. And now show us how this can have an impact on your photo.

Thats what led me to above emotional picture i call “Red Heart”. It is easy. Its all about feeling. Feeling do have colors. Love is red, anger red also and sometimes green. Warmth is yellow, light is white, sun is glow and has yellow near golden touch. Try to remember your raw material. See the portrait and remember. That is the way and the key to such composings. Yes. Only with composing complex enough its possible to express that situation you have been in. Give it a try. It will lead you to most expressive, heavy loaded pictures with that “boom Boom” effect. Pictures which will lead to stunning results and open mouths.

While searching for the light, flagging it, steering it to where you want it to be, have a close look to the dark parts, to the shadows. Maybe you discover a gem… like me. So do not hesitate, take the chance and a picture as well. Put it together with what you already learned about composing, creating analog film look and give it a special look. That is all about it. OK, crop it if you need to do so but never change the mood of the picture. Always remember YOUR mood, your feeling when you took the photo. Such should show up in the final work as well.

Where the dream begins

Sitting in between all this mighty old Olive trees, smelling them, touching their skin, that is the moment, that is the place where the dream begins, where emotions start jumping thru your body, the moment when meditation starts. Giving ideas, feeding your brain with visions, with creations. That is the moment when you start to see the scenery thru your heart. Press the button, let the emotions go, they will lead you to a wonderful experience. So i took this picture, knowing, that it will be only a starting point for a new piece of art work for my Olivetree series. Feeling the soul of the trees, see they slow dance

You do not know what is going on in her head when she is presenting herself towards you. Sometimes it is fun, sometimes lust, sometimes erotic feeling maybe and sometimes she may even hate you for what YOU are doing ! So do not never ever ask her what she is thinking now or even feeling !!

Terrible mistake. Just let her mood flow. Use it. It is her expression and as part of the emotional layer it will help to build up a strong expression for you and your picture.

Delight

And she did what a girl can do with a man. Teasing, smiling, kidding. It is part of her roleplay as a woman to do so. All women want to be beautiful, so it is your part as photographer to help her and to show her that she is indeed beautiful. You just have to look at her and find her “sweet spot”. Find her look, find her pose, her hairstyling, her make-up which fits best and motivate her to use it. Even if it is unfamiliar to her. Add something from your accessories: a necklace, earrings, a fingerring, a veil which supports her. That is indeed something she can hold, which gives her confidence. The outcome for you is what you can see thru your finder. And if done well, you will look at the scene and you have to force yourself to look thru the finder :). See her eyes …. she is eyes … boy !

She will be thankful to you. You made her a star, it was delight for her and hopefully to you as well. And let her work that feeling to its full extend. It will be your delight as well.

This is what a simple veil and a simple story can do for you. I hope this examples illustrate the success you can have if correctly implemented.

And always look for the “Sweet spot”, her best look. Keep in mind: She may have more than one !! Try it. Look for it. The more you try the better you get. It is that easy.
