From wrapped to hide is just a small move, a gentle move with female elegance. Lift the veil and put it around the shoulders, use it as a scarf. Hide parts of the face but let the eyes be the center of the picture and throw a glimpse of a smile thru the scarf to the observer. Thats exactly what she did, the female way.

Sit around …

As i already said earlier, always watch your model, have her in focus whatever she is doing. Even a break should not break your photographic stream. In this example she sits around, arranging hair and i took the picture. She laughed, tried a new look but in the end it was a disaster. The hair looked as if created by electroshock but gave us a new inspiration to do that again in a different set. More on this later.

The seeress

Yes, i took an older portrait of the veiled seeress, smiling into my cam, seeing my future :) And today i decided to rework it into an analog style type of picture. Did she she that already when i took the picture ?

The decision to take a picture or not is often a question of a second. Not driven by rational thinking but done by emotional things. The base on which your finger decides to press the shutter is a feeling not a thought. As in this picture. The only thing i did was talking with the model, joking, adjusting the cam for the next scene and she, just girl, playing around with the given veils and fabrics. The decision to press the button, to shoot the scene, i think, was driven by her facial expression within a second, and thru the way she looked thru the veil. So what… i took the scene to photographic memory :)

The needle

Go for details, is one of my often used approaches in shootings to establish an emotional layer with my subject. It is fun and it breaks the ice. You will get laughter and astonished looking model, while you are on the search for some good looking details. But that is all about it. When you concentrate and focus on one detail you will see your subject is focussing as well on this little detail, trying to show it from its best side. A session within a session. This is exciting ! New situations will derive from such “mini-sessions” giving new inspirations to both of you.

The only thing you have to do is to look ! Just open your view and detect details while working on the complete scene.
In this case, she was the initial factor. Always trying to fix that needles in her hair, preventing them from falling to the ground. “Pling” it made and it was again on the ground. So we made it the center of a mini-shoot and got a lot of new ideas for the planned shooting. Altering the flow with that new ideas. And got new ideas for an alternative shooting based on that tiny needle…

All done with Olympus E-M5, Summilux 25, f1.4 ISO250, 1/160 second and one remote triggered flash with 1/32 power and bounced !!!

Samurai´s rose

The rose of his life is his wife. And she knows very well how to protect herself when he, the samurai, is not in the house to protect her with his sword, his life.

She knows how to handle such things. If anyone tries nasty things, just keep in mind: She can´t take a joke in case of her home, her family her kids ….

Done with Olympus E-P3, Zuiko 45mm @f1.8, 1/60 second and again no flash used.

And suddenlay she asked “more ?” And her hand showed what she was willing to do. That was a surprise at all. We planned to do a portrait shooting and suddenly it turned into a boudoir session. So what ? Should i say NO ?

Be prepared for the unexpected. I took my second light, the reflector and we did a fantastic boudoir shooting. As i could see she was already well prepared, dressed in fine lingerie and makeup. She even knew her poses and did very well. This was a wonderful example for a working emotional layer and trust …. do so too…

Combination

So, we talked about different things. Selective sharpness on interesting things, place subject NOT in the middle, compose with other picture, spice up, do vignettes, look for details, lead the observer etc. And today i say: Combine it !

You learned hopefully a lot of little things, small details. OK it is time to do a complete picture. Take a detail look, place it a bit off the middle, take it with very small DOF and compose an attractive background. This may be a bit more tricky. You have to do layers and layermasks within your software. You do not have such a software ?? Photoshop too expensive ?? Take THE GIMP. A fantastic free software ! It can do nearly everything photoshop can do and costs nothing, nada, niente ! Give it a try ! Its a great software which enables you for layers, layermasks and the complete range of darkroom gimmicks available in our electronic version :)

Hey, look !

Today is a lazy day. Even the weather is lazy :). No sun only gray clouds and a bit rainy. Everything is boring. You know that ?? So spice up your a day a bit. Watch your model how she answers her daily essential questions in front of her wardrobe. “How should i dress today ?”. “The red one ?? The greens ? Or those with the yellow spots on it ? And if, which lingerie should i dress ? Okay today i take CHOCOLATE !”

Well, decision is made and Bang here she is. Dressed in chocolate added with same nice accessories, a yellow ribbon, a sweet ring. Nice looking. And yes, she felt good in such dress and enjoyed her dress as well. “Hey, photographer, look !” What could i do ? You name it: Klick, Klick, Klick…. and again the lazy day turns to be a good day ! “Yes, work with that ribbon as well !” Clear advice, she can easily follow. And look what she made out of it.

Details: Olympus E-5, Sigma 50 f1.4 @ f2, ISO200, 1/125 second, 50 mm focal length. No flash added, no reflector, just the light from the window. So place her accordingly to make the best of it. It is that easy, try it at home !

Invisible

It happens nearly all the time, that things are done invisible to others. Small acts, gestures, movements not recognized. It is worth looking close. Look ! Look what your model is doing while not being photographed. See all the funny things she is doing while not in your focus, unobserved. Try to catch such moments of unbelievable beauty.

You will never regret. And again it is an easy setup for this picture. Olympus E-5, ISO100, f4.5, 1/30 second to let the roomlight register, one single hotshoe flash bounced to my left into one white reflector a bit behind her.
